This was much easier than trying to expand their country through a war with their neighbor. The new world did not have Christianity and many felt it was their duty to do so. Some people wanted to practice their religion more strictly and choose the new world to do this. Being a successful explorer created fame and could allow someone to create a successful life for themselves when they returned.
