Explain the difference between proactive interference and retroactive interference. (psychology)

Proactive interference is the interference effect of previously learned materials on the acquisition and retrieval of newer material.

Example of proactive interference:

remembering a friend's new phone number after having a previously learned their old number

Retroactive interference is when more recent information gets in the way of trying to recall older information

Example of retroactive interference:

calling your ex- boyfriend/girlfriend by your new boyfriend/girlfriend's name.
