There are many factors that can affect falling in love. These factors are proximity, the mere-exposure effect, physical attractiveness, and similarity. 

Proximity refers to the geographic distance of two people. People are more likely to become friends or fall in love if they are closer together. The mere-exposure effect goes along with proximity and states that people tend to like stimuli more if they encounter it repeatedly.

Research has shown that romantic attraction is greatly influenced by physical attraction. When beginning to date people are more likely drawn to people they consider attractive. Men also tend to value physical attractiveness more than women. 

People also tend to pick people to date with similar characteristics to themselves. Some of these similarity factors might be age, intelligence, religion, social class, and personality. There has been some suggestion that similarity is what causes attraction. 

There are two types of love, passionate and compassionate. The main difference of the two is that passionate love involves arousal. This could be shown by heart racing, anticipation, and having "butterflies" in your stomach when around the loved person. Self disclosure is the process of communication by which one person reveals information about them self to another. There are two parts to self disclosure, breadth and depth. The breadth of self disclosure is the range of topics discussed by two individuals and depth is the degree of which the information is personal or private.
