This period is distinguished by the transition from the political system from absolute monarchy to constitutional and republican government, controlled by and for the people. During this period the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the Haitian Revolution, the uprising of the independence patriots in Latin America and the Industrial Revolution took place in the mid-1800s.

In this era, the imperialist countries of Europe were weakened, losing much of their wealth throughout the New World, which favored the independence processes at the global level. For Britain, the loss of the Thirteen Colonies marked a turning point in expansionary policy, with Asia and the Pacific becoming new targets for external expansion.
