what is an mp3 file?

an mp3 file is one of the most popular file formats used for compressing digital music files. the mp3 file format shrinks the audio file so it will take up less space (memory). for example, when copying mp3 files to a writable cd, you can fit up to 10 to 20 times more music than you can on a traditional cd. an mp3 file of a song will also take up less space without sacrificing the sound quality. this is because the mp3 file format was specifically designed for audio files.
