Sly and the Family Stone are credited with introducing the "slap bass" sound to funk music that is now considered standard in this style. This effect is usually created by the bass player slapping the lower sounding strings of the electric bass with the side of his thumb and "popping" the higher strings by pulling and releasing quickly the higher sounding strings. In one of the pioneering songs using this style, "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)," the "slap bass" effect is very prominent. Listen to the song and describe what "slap bass" sounds like to you (perhaps make analogies) AND the impact this effect has on the style of the song.
