COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE TWO FAMILIES +35 points The Bach Family Music plays a more important role in some families than in others. In some families, it occupies a central—and even professional—role. One historical example of such a family is that of the great composer Johann Sebastian Bach. The family in which Bach grew up was comprised largely of professional musicians. Bach's own children were renowned for their musical achievements. Three sons: Carl Philipp Emanuel, Johann Christian, and Johann Christoph Friedrich, like their father, influenced the development of classical music. The Marsalis Family Musical dynasties are not a relic of ages past. The twentieth century had its share of notable musical families such as the family of Ellis and Dolores Marsalis. Like Bach's family, the father shaped and nurtured his children's musical talents. A pianist, composer, and teacher, Ellis provided fatherly and musical guidance. Four of the Marsalis sons have gone on to achieve international fame as musicians. These include: Branford (b. 1960), who plays the saxophone. The winner of several Grammy awards, Branford has diverse musical interests, ranging from jazz to classical to pop. In addition to his thriving career as a soloist, he has produced albums for other artists and composed film scores. Wynton (b. 1961), who plays the trumpet. Like his brother Branford, Wynton has achieved success as a performer and a composer. His jazz and classical recordings have won him nine Grammy awards. His epic composition about slavery, titled Blood on the Fields, earned him the 1997 Pulitzer Prize in music. Wynton is the artistic director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center program. He has contributed to music education through a television series and his Jazz for Young People series at Lincoln Center. Delfeayo (b. 1965), who plays the trombone. Delfeayo postponed his career as a trombonist to produce albums by his father and older brothers. Since pursuing a career as a performer, he has played with bands led by music greats such as Ray Charles, Art Blakey, and Fats Domino. Jason (b. 1976), who plays the drums. An innovative musician, Jason has performed in the successful Latin fusion group Los Hombres Calientes as well as the Marcus Roberts Trio. In addition to performing on collaborative recordings, Jason has recorded critically acclaimed solo albums.
