No artwork should be thrown away. Every piece of artwork that is created is unique and beautiful, no matter what it looks like. All artwork has a meaning and has a value of it's own.
So in my opinion, you should keep it! As a reminder of how much you've grown and thrived throughout this skill of yours! And for a suggestion of animals, I suggest maybe a Chinchilla or maybe a Fox!
