He used bitumen to coat the plate. He exposed it to light to record a permanent image. After the success of his experiment, he associated with French Louis Daguerre to create what was known as the Daguerreotype, using a copper plate with silver and added a chemical called iodine. They exposed the image to light for approximately 15 minutes, and there you go!
