When producing War of the Worlds for the radio, Orson Welles wanted to increase the tension by using the names of real towns for his radio play. Why was this a problem? Few people knew the names of towns in their regions.

Radio plays were meant to be realistic and fool audiences.

Welles did not want to have to create fictional names for the towns.

It made it more like a news broadcast, so people interpreted it as real.
