What is the difference between strings and hair on violins, violas, cellos, basses and their bows?

The strings on the instruments are very strong, thats why you can pluck them and each one makes a different sound. The hair on the bows is fragile, which is why there is so much of it all together, because single ones are constantly breaking. You also must put resin on the bows to try to prevent any single hairs from breaking.

violin strings are thinnest out of all of them. viola strings are slightly thicker, cello strings are thicker than viola strings, and bass strings are the thickest of all of them. as for their bows, they have more hair on it depending on how big the instrument is. for example, a violin bow would have way less bow hair than a bass bow. more bow hair is needed to play on thicker strings.
