Linear Perspective: Using lines based on rules of geometry that give the illusion of depth and distance.
Study this Renaissance painting titled “School of Athens” by Raphael and notice how your eye moves into the scene. Write a 2 paragraph description of this artwork and use every term from the definitions of the linear perspective below. Type it and submit it
Horizon Line: The actual horizon is where the earth meets the sky or the sky meets the ocean.
Parallel Lines: lines that are always the same distance from each other. They never meet.
Picture Plane: The picture plane is the actual surface of a drawing or painting.
Perpendicular: Vertical and horizontal lines at a 90-degree angle.
Vertical: A-line that is perpendicular to the horizon line. A vertical line is "standing up".
Horizontal: A line is parallel to the horizon line. A horizontal line is "lying down".
Eye Level: A level that coincides with the viewer’s eyes
Vanishing Point: A point at which parallel lines receding into space appear to meet.
Foreshortening: The appearance of objects becoming smaller as they go back in space when and larger when up close. A circle becomes an ellipse, a square becomes a trapezoid.
