UNIT 5 ACTIVITY
Art Self-Critique
After everything that we have learned about the critiquing process, it’s time to try it out for ourselves—by doing a self-critique!
For this activity, you will want to consider a recent piece of art you created—this might be something you were inspired to do in an earlier unit or something you created a while ago.
Next, you will go step by step through the critiquing process that you learned in this unit. While you don’t have to answer all the of the questions suggested below, you will want to address at least two from each section.
You can use a word processing program or a slide show presentation to write and submit your critique. Be sure to carefully label each section of the critique and use complete sentences, not bullet points.
You will also need to include at least two photographs of the art that you are critiquing, but you may include more if you choose to.
You will be graded on your thoughtful and thorough responses to each part of the critique and your ability to answer at least two of the suggested questions. For more details on how you will be graded, refer to the rubric below.
Suggested critique questions:

Who is the artist of this piece? (Name who made the piece of art you are looking at.)

What is the subject matter of the piece/What is it about? What is the scene you see?
What objects are in the piece? (people, trees, hills, cars, buildings, etc.)

What effect does color have on the piece?
How has the artist used shapes within the work of art?
In what ways has the artist used line throughout the piece?

How has the artist used light in this piece? Has the artist used light tints/shadows or light and dark values in a different way?
Are there points of emphasis in the piece of a specific scene, figure, or movement?
Interpret (answer at least two)
Try to talk about the artist’s statement. Describe what you personally believe the artist is trying to say through their work of art.
What feelings do you get when looking at this particular piece? What parts of the piece cause you to have those feelings?
Does the art remind you of personal experiences?
Evaluate (answer at least two)
Why do you think the artist created this particular piece?
What parts of the artwork or qualities make you feel as if the artist did a good job?
What parts of the artwork or qualities do you feel the artist could improve on?
Does the piece seem original (original is another way of saying something is unique or one of a kind)? Why or why not?
