Why have so many places in the amazon been turned into reserves?

I believe that many areas in the Amazon have been turned into reserves so as to prevent deforestation of the trees and preserve the forest. People are not allowed to cut tress located in the reserves. This has conserved and protected nature and wildlife. Without these reserves the amazon forest would have been close to being extinct.
