Why are solutions of strong bases (e. g. naoh) dangerous to the eyes?

Sodium hydroxide is one of the most commonly used chemicals. It is one of the strongest alkalies, also known as lye or caustic soda. It is a highly reactive component. It dissolves in water with the generation of greater amount of heat that may ignite combustible substances nearby, or may result in physical destruction.

While handling the chemical, proper precaution should be taken mainly in the possibility of the chemical to come in contact with the eyes, as the chemcial can go deep through the eyes. One of the most potent signs of eye injury due to caustic soda is destruction of the cornea accompanied by loss of usual vision and clouding.

This can even result in certain eye conditions, like cataract and glaucoma. The clouding and ulceration in the eye may result in permanent blindness.
