Stormwater refers to the water that arises at the time of the events of precipitation and melting of snow and ice. Stormwater can infiltrate into the soil, can get evaporate and get held on the surface, or runoff and end up in the adjacent rivers, streams, or other water bodies.

The pollutants entering the stormwater at the time of precipitation events is known as polluted runoff. The daily human actions lead to deposition of pollutants on lawns, roads, farm fields, roofs, and others. The amount of human activities leads to enough quantities of pollutants to affect the receiving water sources like a lake, river, or the ocean.  

Managing the quality and quantity of the stormwater is known as stormwater management. The stormwater control measure is usually used to signify towards both engineered and structural control devices and systems to store or treat polluted stormwater.
