The main variation between the axial and appendicular skeleton is that the axial skeleton makes  up the central role of the body whereas the appendicular skeleton connects the appendages to

the axial skeleton.

EXPLANATION:

The axial skeleton consists of six components: the skull, the ossicles of the central ear, the vertebral  line, hyoid, rib cage, including the sternum while the appendicular skeleton consists of limbs and girdles.  The axial skeleton includes to the piece of the frame that consists of the osseins of the head and trunk of  a vertebrate while the appendicular skeleton is the part of the skeleton of vertebrates consisting of the  bones that support the members.
