Algae preforms both photosynthesis and cellular respiration when incubated in the presence of light.

Algae preform only the Calvin cycle part of photosynthesis and cellular respiration when incubated in the absence of light.

Algae do perform photosynthesis and cellular respiration during light just like other plant specie. They use chlorophyll a or b as pigments to collect light energy and drive the process of photosynthesis.

We know that photosysnthesis is basically a two step process i.e light reactions and dark reactions (dark reaction is also called Calvin cycle). So, in dark algae only performs Calvin cycle and shuts off the light harvesting steps of photosynthesis. However, cellular respiration keeps going throughout the life of algae without being affected. We can say that algae share these characteristics with the green plants.
