In addition to the bonds which hold monomers together within a polymer chain, many polymers additionally have bonds formed between neighboring chains. many have the initial polymer chain bonds directly between neighboring chains thereby significantly affecting the properties of the polymer. such modified polymers exhibit a high degree of "memory." when pressured, the chains may straighten out, but once the stress is removed they return to their original position and the object returns to its original shape.
