The process of sexual reproduction includes fusion of female and male gametes coming from both the parents. In the process of sexual reproduction, a new individual is produced due to the combination of two haploid gametes, one from the female parent, and the other coming from the male parent.  

The importance of sexual reproduction:  

1. The joining of DNA from two distinct individuals results in the increase in the genetic variation in the offspring.  

2. This further results in diversity in the population that assists in natural selection.
