The rate at which photosynthesis occurs, or whether it can occur at all,  is highly dependent on the environment of the photosynthetic organism.  Three of the most important determinants of the rate of photosynthesis  are as follows:

1.  Light intensity

2. Amount of carbon dioxide present

3. Temperature

1. Light intensity is important. As the intensity of light increases, the rate of  photosynthesis will gradually increase as well. The photosynthetic rate  will continue increasing in relation to the intensity of light until it reaches  a peak. Once the photosynthetic rate peaks, photosynthesis can't go  any faster regardless of any increase in the intensity of light. If the  intensity of light decreases, photosynthesis will also decrease.

2. The amount of carbon dioxide present can also influence the rate of  photosynthesis. Like the relationship between light intensity and  photosynthetic rate, more carbon dioxide in the environment allows for a  faster rate of photosynthesis. As the amount of carbon dioxide  increases, the photosynthetic rate increases as well. Once the rate of  photosynthesis reaches its peak, however, further increases in carbon  dioxide levels are irrelevant, as photosynthesis can't proceed any faster.  

3. Temperature is also an important factor in photosynthetic rate.  Photosynthesis proceeds faster at higher temperatures. However, if the  temperature becomes too high, the rate of photosynthesis will decline  steeply.
