An example of tubers is the potato. These type of underground stems have "eyes", those deep notches that you see on potatoes. New stems can grow from these eyes and the fall off eventually. These pieces make a new plant!

Bulb, well they are shaped like a bulb. Like the onion you see there, these bulbs sprout out in the middle. They have layers and layers of skin. The roots are usually attached at the bottom of the bulbs.

Rhizomes grow horizontally, like you see in the picture. They grow underground and near the surface. At each node of the rhizome a shoot grows out laterally, so they grow towards the surface (because the stem is on its side).

Runners like strawberries, also grow horizontally but they grow new plants at each node (they grow their own roots and all) , also they usually grow ON the surface or just below the surface.
