Water contaminated with pathogenic bacteria needs to be disinfected before reentering a public waterway. infected water, 200 l, is added into a 1000 l tank. the contaminated water contains 105cells/l and no chlorine disinfectant. chlorine at a concentration of 1000 mg/l and freshwater is added to the tank at a volume that makes the concentration 2 mg/l. water flows out of the tank at a rate of 0.1 l/min. chlorine kills bacteria and is broken down in the tank. this disinfection happens at a rate of 100 cells dead per min, and the breakdown of chlorine happens at a rate of 0.01 mg/l per min (0.01 mg l-1min-1, *the volume of liquid in the tank is what is being broken-down)residence time is the average time a substance is in a given location (volume of tank/outflow rate). what is the residence time of the infected water in the system? what volume of chlorinated water needs to be added to the experiment? assume that the tank volume stays constant over time by maintenance of starting chlorine concentration. what is the bacterial concentration in the water running out of the tank, use the residence time and the rate of cell death when exposed to the disinfectant? what would you consider doing to improve the treatment system? take your time. draw a box diagram to describe the system showing all inputs and outputs.
