(2014) conducted a study involving 10 women with conversion disorder. the findings revealed that when the anesthetic body part was stimulated, there was decreased activation in somatosensory cortex but increased activation in areas such as the anterior cingulate cortex and the insula. these results support the notion that

sensory areas of the brain may be inhibited by overactive emotion-based processing areas of the brain.
