A dam is used to store running water. The dam acts as a reservoir for running water. Then the water is rushed over a turbine. The turbine converts the kinetic energy with which the water is moving into mechanical energy. When the turbine turns, then the generator attached to it also spins which convert the mechanical energy into electrical energy.
