Which cranial nerve is the exception and travels to the thoracic and abdominal cavities?

The longest cranial nerve that controls the parasympathetic system is vagus nerve. The parasympathetic supply is provided by the vagus nerve. The parasympathetic system regulates breathing, organs of digestive system and slows the heart rate. Vagus nerve is the exception and travels to the thoracic and abdominal cavities.  

The reflex actions are also controlled by vagus nerves. The reflex actions like vomiting, swallowing, sneezing and coughing. The vagus nerve also regulates the vasomotor activity.
