Explanation:

There are four muscles in the anterior compartment of the leg.

1. Tibialis anterior

2. Extensor digitorum longus

3. Extensor hallucis longus and

4. Fibularis tertius.

Based on their origins and insertions on the foot, contraction of these four muscles will lead to a shortening of the muscle’s body and cause the dorsum of the foot to be pulled towards the leg. This movement is known as dorsiflexion. Also, certain muscles from this group assist in the inversion of the foot.

The muscles in this compartment are innervated by the deep fibular nerve (L4-S1), and blood is supplied via the anterior tibial artery.
