The cochlea is the cavity that is present in the inner ear.The function of cochlea is to produce the nerve impulses in response to the sound vibrations. The cochlea consists of receptor organs for hearing.  

The cochlea consists of tiny hair cells that is responsible for interpreting the vibrations of the sounds and generating them into electrical impulses. The electrical impulses are transferred to the brain through the sensory nerves.

If the hair cells are broken, bent and sheared off then this results in damage  of cochlea and the cochlea will not function normally as the hair cells in the cochlea are not able to regenerate themselves.
