Set all of your lab equipment in any order on your work surface. Now, pick up the glass or jar farthest to your right. Set the jar down anywhere. Fill any two jars to the rim with water. Turn around and talk to someone in the room, staying as close to your table as possible. Did the edges of your hair get wet? Imagine what would happen if there was a chemical rather than just water in those containers! Record your observations and thoughts. Now, go back and pick up the original container that was farthest to your right. Do you know which one it was? Perhaps, you are lucky enough to remember, but things tend to look the same in lab. Why do you think it is important to label all lab materials?

Next you will perform any five steps that require you to reach across your work surface. Did your sleeves get wet? Did any water spill? Did you knock over the empty plastic cups? The purpose of this part of the lab is to show you how easily loose clothes can be used to sweep along any lab materials and also to stress the importance of a clean and neat work area. What could happen if there was a flame on your work surface and you were wearing loose shirt sleeves or dangling bracelets?

For this step, be sure you use the buddy system since you will be using a knife. It is also recommended that you use latex gloves for this portion, although it is not required. On a glass surface, use your knife to cut an onion. Continue cutting the onion into smaller pieces for at least 3 minutes. What did you notice about your nose and eyes? When do you think it is important to wear safety goggles? In your response to the analysis questions, be sure to reflect on this incident.

As you clean up your work area, make a note about each item that was cleaned up.

Post Lab Analysis
Complete the following analysis and record your responses to the questions in the space provided below.

Restate your hypothesis about the dangers that can happen if one does not follow two different safety procedures.

Reflecting on step 3, why do you think there is a rule about loose clothes and dangling jewelry? Can you think of two dangerous things that might happen from not following this safety rule?

In step 4, you stirred two different chemicals with the same spoon. Why do you think this might not be a good practice for lab safety? What do you think was the purpose of
Look at your notes for step 10. What did you do with the glasses, cups, and utensils? Whenever possible, it is important to use materials that can be re-used so that our labs do not contribute to solid waste. For this course, it will also be important to work with the least dangerous choices for each chemical. We will learn about toxic and hazardous substances, and we do not want our lab practices to contribute to these substances in our landfills or waters. What did you do with the colored water? What about the paper napkins or paper towels you used to line your work area? Can you count how many pieces of solid waste were created for this lab? What do you think would be a reasonable goal for the waste we create for the remainder of the labs? How can you make sure that you do your part in sticking to that goal?

Be sure to conclude your lab with a concise summary of at least one paragraph. Your conclusion should include the results of the steps summarized so that the meaning is clear. It should also include reasons for safety rules based on the results of what happened during the experiments.
