Why was the plastic toy spill so helpful to scientists studying ocean currents

Explanation:

In 1992, a cargo ship, en route to Washington from Hongkong, was carrying containers of bath toys (such as plastic yellow ducks). A heavy storm caused the container to fell off from the ship into the Pacific Ocean, spilling all the bath toys in the ocean. Months later, some plastic yellow ducks were seen washed on the shores of Alaska, some 2000 miles away from the Pacific ocean. Then after few months and years later it was seen on the beach of Washington, Canada and even in Scotland.

Now this journey of bath toys to different far away places gave scientists alot of information about how the objects move along the ocean currents.
