Culture describes a system of thoughts and behaviors in humans. It is made up of the sum of the sharing of symbols, patterns, and learning.  Among groups, culture can be readily shared, exchanged and superseded. Understanding culture is integral to mapping the development of human society; the study of human culture is called anthropology.

Subcultures are distinct cultural norms that exist within a large cultural group; they are somewhat separate, and have differing beliefs from this larger group.  These develop different approaches to sexuality, politics and culture. For instance, a subculture within mainstream culture is goth culture.
