Since the 1970s, many changes in waste disposal have taken place. Recycling has become a regular part of garbage pick-up. In some places it is mandatory. Compost pick-up, clean incineration, and proper disposal in high-tech, environmentally-friendly industrial centers is common practice for industrialized nations. This is not true in other parts of the world where poor waste management practices are still in use.
