Effects of Mutations on RNA Splicing in Eukaryotes?
Most eukaryotic genes have noncoding stretches of nucleotides (introns) that lie between the coding regions (exons). Both introns and exons are transcribed, but the introns are then cut out of the primary transcript and the exons joined together. This process, called RNA splicing, produces mature mRNA that contains only exons.
Certain mutations affecting introns can interfere with RNA splicing.
