Why don't prokaryotic cells divide through mitosis? Mitosis requires a cell membrane, and prokaryotes don't have a cell membrane. Mitosis and cytokinesis require cytoplasm, and prokaryotes don't have cytoplasm. Mitosis is division of the nucleus, and prokaryotes don't have a nucleus. Mitosis requires DNA and chromosomes, and prokaryotes don't have chromosomes.
