Why is nitrogen essential to the growth of a fungus, but not to the spread of rust?

For the answer to the question above, I believe that A fungus is a living organism, while rust is not a living organism. It is a part of a process of Erosion.
It is the degradation of iron which is a metal and not a living thing.
