Experimental Design Baseline Assessment: Rosa's Geranium Experiment
Rosa read that plants grow better in acidic soil. She decides to do an
experiment to see if using vinegar will help geranium plants grow
taller. At the beginning, she predicts that vinegar will not make the
plants grow taller.
Rosa starts with nine geranium plants. Each plant is in the same size container with the same
amount and type of soil. Rosa puts all plants on the windowsill in her room so they receive the
same amount of sunlight.
Rosa waters all nine plants on the same days using the same amount of liquid. Three plants are
given 10% vinegar solution. Three plants are given 20% vinegar solution. The last three plants
are given pure water. She measures the height of the plants every week for six weeks. She
also records the color of the leaves and if the plants look healthy or not. Rosa's data is in the
table below.
