Explanation:

Osmosis is the diffusion of a solvent.

Basically, a solvent, which is oftentimes water, moves across a semipermeable membrane, such as a cell membrane. Semipermeable means that certain molecules can pass through, but others cannot. The solvent moves from a low solute concentration to a high solute concentration.

This process balances out the concentration of solute and solvent and helps maintain homeostasis.
