Why would competition be considered a limiting factor within an ecosystem

Competition in the ecosystem is the interaction between organisms wherein both species are harmed. The competition can be considered as a limiting factor within an ecosystem because there is a limited supply of resources that can be used and consumed by both. Competition is essential in order for these species to survive.
