The atmosphere is the layer of gases forming an envelop around the earth. The earth's atmosphere is composed of mainly nitrogen and oxygen as well as other gases such as carbon dioxide and water vapor.

The biosphere refers to the regions of the earth's surface on which living organisms can be found. It includes the land, air and water.

Carbon dioxide is cycled between the atmosphere and the biosphere by the process of photosynthesis which is the process by which green plants manufacture their food with the aid of energy from sunlight.

From the model, in the first stage, energy of sunlight is trapped by light-dependent reactions and is used it to make ATP and NADPH. During the second stage, the light-independent reactions use ATP and NADPH reduce carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to sugars and ADP and NADP⁺.

Thus, photosynthesis serves as a process of transferring carbon between the atmosphere and the biosphere.
