Peppermint is a natural insect deterrent. A homeowner wants to get rid of the ants she has been finding in her backyard so she plants a few peppermint plants. Pretty quickly she finds that the ants stay about 10-15 feet away from each of the plants, so she plants more peppermint plants all around the perimeter of her backyard to create an “ant barrier.” Ants recognize this peppermint scent as something very unpleasant, and thus avoid the peppermint plants by keeping their distance. Ants that go towards the scent cannot tolerate it and can become ill. Offspring of all of the ants will also avoid the peppermint plants. Is this an example of natural selection? Justify your response with appropriate evidence.
