Exercise 6: Missing a Day Let's run the same scenario, with one small difference. You develop PIPDD, and visit your doctor. Your doctor prescribes a Naquadria regimen of one pill every day for ten days. Page 15 of 17You follow your doctor's orders, but make one mistake: you MISS DAY 4 of your regimen. Thus, the only bacterial mortality that will occur on Day 4 is due to your own body's defenses. Although you don't take a pill on Day 4, you start taking pills again on Day 5, and continue through Day 10. How will this seemingly minor error affect the bacterial population in your body? Make sure that you re-read "The Effect of Skipping a Dose", above. This explains how to model the skipped dose correctly. You begin with the same numbers of bacteria as before: Strain A = 40, Strain B = 30, Strain C = 20, and Strain D = 10. Remember, these numbers represent thousands of bacteria. Procedure: 1) Use our Model to determine what happens to the bacteria in your body over the course of ten days. Do your calculations by hand, with a calculator, with a spreadsheet program such as Excel, or with an online calculator such as www. easycalculation. com. Keep track of your data in a Data Table like the one described above. It's a good idea to try all mathematical calculations more than once, to be sure you don't make any mistakes. Here are some hints:- At the end of Day 7, the final populations are Strain A (0), Strain B (0), Strain C (90), Strain D (582)- At the end of Day 9, the final populations are Strain A (0), Strain B (0), Strain C (7), Strain D (130)- Strain A is wiped out on Day 4- Strain B is wiped out on Day 7- Strain C is wiped out on Day 10- Strain D is still present on Day 10You won't be turning in your actual calculations for grading, but keep them. Your Instructor may ask to see them to ensure you did the exercise correctly.2-4) OmittedAnswer the following questions. Record your answers in your Workbook.5) Was the infection completely wiped out by the end of Day 10? 6) Compare the results of this Exercise to those from Exercise 5. Did Strains A and B survive a lot longer when the dose was skipped? 7) Compare the results of this Exercise to those from Exercise 5. Did Strains C and D survive a lot longer when the dose was skipped? 8) Which days were you contagious for Strains A or B?9) Which days were you contagious for Strain C?10) Which days were you contagious for Strain D?
Page 16 of 1711) If you infected someone while you were contagious, would you be likely to infect them with a Strain that has resistance to Naquadria (such as Strain C or D), or one that doesn't have resistance to Naquadria (such as strain A or B)?
