•Stomach acid activates the enzyme pepsinogen, important for the digestion of proteins. With achlorhydria proteins aren’t efficiently digested and reach the large intestine. The bacteria that live there have a big party on this unexpected bonus, causing gas, bloating and diarrhoea.

•Iron needs to be in solution for absorption. It dissolves much better at low pH. So achlorhydria hinders iron absorption.

•Stomach acid helps kill any bacteria consumed with food. Achlorhydria allow these bacteria to get lower down in the gut. Where they, too, party causing gas, bloating and diarrhoea.

•When you eat food it prompts the production of the hormone gastrin. This prompts the stomach to produce acid. The acid lowers stomach pH and this switches off gastrin production. With achlorhydria stomach pH stays high and gastrin production isn’t switched off causing hypergastrinaemia. This can cause tumours to form in the stomach.
