1. Disturbance- the interruption of a settled and peaceful condition

2. Floods- an overflowing amount of water beyond its normal confines

3. Wildfires- large destructive fires that spread quickly over woodland or brush

4. Hurricanes- a storm with violent wind

5. Tornadoes- violent storms with destructive rotating winds

6. Tsunami- series of waves in a large body of water cause by a displacement of a large volume of water

7. Primary succession- ecological succession that begins in essentially lifeless areas

8. Pioneer species-  species first to colonize barren environments or previously biodiverse steady-state ecosystems that have been disrupted

9. Secondary succession- previously occupied area re-colonized following a disturbance that kills much or all of its community
