Son 7 Inheritance Lab: Why Is DMD affe EDURE: In this activity you are going to hypothesize the genotypes of physical traits you have and
partner (or a celebrity of your choosing) possess.
of potential offspring. You will also model reproduction, and inheritance for actual traits that you
+1: Determine and record your genotype.
For the purposes of this activity, If you have the dominant trait, let's assume you're heterozygous
unless you know for SURE that No relative (grandparent, aunt, uncle, parent or sibling) has the
recessive trait. Only if no relative is recessive should you put down two dominant alleles.
Some things to note
when determining your genotype--it's not
always as simple as
Brown vs. non brown eyes - There are at least 3 genes for eye color. The best understood is the
Freckles vs. no freckles - Freckles is dominant to no freckles by a single gene. Be sure to
emphasize that this means having a LOT of PERMANENT freckles, not just a couple sun freckles
that come and go depending on how much sunbathing you do.
Dark vs. light hair - Like eye color, hair color is coded for by more than one gene. However, dark
hair (black or brown) is dominant to light hair (blond or red) due to a single gene.
*Biological Sex doesn't fit the dominant/recessive inheritance pattern but is important for
understanding the inheritance of some traits
