How does atp supply energy for cellular activities?

Adenosine triphosphate or ATP is the primary energy molecule present in all living organisms.Organisms capture and store energy from light and food in the form of ATP So, it is also known as molecular currency of a living organism.

ATP provide energy for the metabolic functions within a cell as: ATP molecule is formed by bonding between adenosine sugar and three phophate groups. The energy released from the metabolic reactions like cellular respiration, photosynthesis is stored between the triple bonds formed between the phosphate groups of ATP.

When the cell requires energy to do work, ATP undergo hydrolysis and the high energy triple bond between phosphate groups gets broken down releasing phosphoryl group from its structure forming adenosine diphosphate (ADP) molecule which further break down releasing energy from its first and second phosphates forming adenosine monophosphate (AMP). The released energy is used to drive the metabolic processes of the cell.
