In humans, the cardiovascular system is closed, which means the blood is passed on through veins, capillaries, arteries and the blood always remains within this network. The system includes systemic circulation, which comprises a loop to circulate the oxygen-containing blood to the entire body and pulmonary circulation, a loop connected to the lung to carry oxygenated blood.

The capillaries further branch out of the arterioles and deliver the nutrients and oxygen to different cells.
