Carl Linnaeus is a Swedish classical botanist that named and classified organisms based on their physical characteristics such as shape, color, size etc in 1700. His classification system was later developed into the modern classification system. Carl Linnaeus classified living things into kingdoms (animals, plants, and minerals). Each of these kingdoms were divided into classes, classes were divided into orders, orders were further divided into genera and then species.
