Diatoms are unicellular organisms, they live in fresh as well as in saline water. They exhibit two distinct shapes such as centric diatoms which are radially symmetric and others are pennate diatoms which are bilaterally symmetrical. All types of diatoms possess a cell wall that is made up of silica, it is called as frustule. The silica provides a resistance against the decay of the diatom cell. The cell wall looks like a glass.
