On the basis of the type of activity carbon cycle can be divided into two types:

1. Slow carbon cycle

2. Fast carbon cycle

Slow carbon cycle: It involves the synthesis of carbon through sedimentation of rocks, synthesis of fossil fuels beneath the earth. The rate of synthesis of carbon is slow in these processes.

Fast carbon cycle: It involves the synthesis of carbon through photosynthesis by autotrophs like plants, algae and phytoplankton. These autotrophs convert atmospheric carbon into glucose which is also a form of carbon, this happens at a faster rate.
