Why did deciduous trees lose their leaves in the fall

The trees must lose their leaves during fall in order to save the water during winter. Trees don’t get enough water during winters which can compensates for the loss of water through leaves. Leaves fall down to allow the tree to survive in winter condition and the tree gets ready to grow new leaves in the spring season.
